Programmes & Services
The Metta Home for the Disabled and Metta Home Day Activity Centre were set up in December 2000 in Woodlands to cater to disabled individuals living in the northern region.
Supported by the MCYS and Singapore Totalisator Board Social Service Fund (our day activity centre receives funding from the latter which is administered under the NCSS), we provide residential care and day care services for people with disabilities aged between 16 and 55, irrespective of race and religion.
Our combined premises are able to accommodate 103 residents and 50 day care beneficiaries. Presently, the Metta Home has achieved its maximum clientele of 98 residents with five vacancies meant for respite care and emergency cases, while the day activity centre has 25 beneficiaries.
Tending them with holistic care and working closely with their caregivers is a multi-disciplinary team that comprises a social worker, training officers, staff nurses, assistant nurses, nursing and therapy aides.
Residential Services
Striving to engender integration and warmth in our services to minimise feelings of institutionalisation amongst our residents, we go beyond satisfying their basic physical and medical needs to incorporate community-based programmes into their daily routines.
This serves to encourage normal patterns of living and enhance their social and emotional well-being.
Social outings to places of interest, shopping centres and public facilities are conducted regularly to maintain relevant community exposure, from which they learn to adopt appropriate behaviour for different social settings.
Small group arrangements are made to ensure that more focused attention is directed at improving their coping and social skills.
On the other hand, cognitive stimulation occurs under planned activities like threading, sorting and creating patterns using beads. They are also encouraged to learn simple home management skills like bed making and area cleaning to promote independent living.
Our care professionals continuously monitor and evaluate our programmes to help greying residents age gracefully in place.
Group sports are introduced with the objectives of interaction, rehabilitation and fitness in mind. Assistive sports equipment is available to help those with functional limitations enjoy equal access to these activities.
Day Care Services
Despite framework similarities to our sister centre MIDAC, our training curriculum is customised and modified to meet the beneficiaries’ unique needs and capabilities. It also features different enrichment programmes aimed at developing their living skills.
Cooking lessons are held every Monday, whereas social outings are conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to facilitate training in community living skills. Hydrotherapy sessions take place every Friday at the Choa Chu Kang Swimming Complex.
Regular occupational therapy and physiotherapy interventions are also carried out under properly tailored treatment plans drawn up for residents and day care beneficiaries who suffer from medical conditions like muscular atrophy, structural and postural deformities.
The underlining principle in our programmes is to equip all beneficiaries with the skills and means to lead independent and fulfilling lives, so as to realise the ultimate goal of achieving integration within the society and their respective communities. |
