Programmes & Services
Established in 2001, the Metta School offers special education to children from various races and religions aged seven to 18, who are diagnosed with mild intellectual disability (IQ range of 50 to 70) and/or mild autism.

Supported by the MOE, NCSS and Metta, we strive to fulfill the imperative aim of helping these children function optimally as self-reliant and contributive individuals, empowering them with the means to lead independent and meaningful lives.

Working concertedly towards this mission is our professional team of teachers, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapist, social worker and job placement officer, whose dedication is underpinned by the following core values:

Outcome for students
Train and nourish students to be confident, responsible, useful and ready for employment
love_dot Commitment as a school
Support continuous improvement of instructions and build strong relationships
love_dot Expectation for all students and staff
Create a safe, peaceful, healthy, enriched and caring environment

Central to these principles is our robust and broad-based curriculum that serves to educate, engage and inspire our young charges through ample focus placed on each of these areas:

Functional Academics
Introduced in 2007 to supplant the Basic Education for Skills Training (BEST) programme, the Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WPLN) programme aims to cultivate a stronger set of competencies amongst our students.

Targeted at improving their capability in numeracy and English literacy, the programme involves assessing the students’ current competency level in both areas and determining suitable levels of training to promote effective learning on their part.

Statements of Attainment are awarded to those who demonstrate proficiency in either aspect or both.

Grouping of these students into respective literacy and numeracy classes is then carried out according to their results and proficiency levels.

Pre-Vocational Training
Following an assessment of their aptitude and skills, students aged 16 and above are offered specialisation courses in one of these three areas - housekeeping, food preparation and baking. Structured vocational training is conducted by experienced industry trainers.

School-To-Work Programme
Implemented in January 2006, this programme prepares graduating students for future employment and external environmental demands via work attachments conducted under three progressive stages.

The initial phase requires students to job-shadow general support staff (such as clerical officers and attendants) for a fortnight in school, before advancing to the second phase in which they understudy and assist staff mentors from Metta’s affiliated centres for a duration of two to three weeks.

Through relevant task exposure, they hone their skills in food and beverage preparation, baking, customer service, general maintenance and clerical work.

The final phase - which entails four- to six-week external job stints arranged in tandem with our corporate partners - marks their crossing over from sheltered environments to real-life job settings.

A notable example is our collaboration with McDonald’s to conduct a Work Attachment Programme since April 2007 to provide relevant training and hands-on practice for students aged 14 and above.

Visual & Performing Arts
Hailing from diverse ethnic backgrounds, performing arts immerse our students in a culturally rich, multi-faceted and dynamic learning environment. Adding diversity and depth to our students’ learning experience is an exciting palette of visual arts activities.

Encouraging them to harness their interests and talents beyond academia, our flourishing range of aesthetic arts (listed as follows) tap on their natural ability to relate to colour and form, paving for creative avenues of self-expression and engaging alternatives to occupational therapy:

Angklung bullet Choir bullet Mosaic Art
bullet Arts & Crafts bullet Dancing bullet Music & Drama
bullet Batik Painting bullet Gamelan bullet Photography (CCA)
bullet Chinese Calligraphy bullet Handbell bullet Pottery
bullet Chinese Orchestra bullet Lion Dance (CCA) bullet Wushu

The availability of these artistic settings allows our students to build up their commitment towards excellence and foster cultural sensitivities.

Perseverance, patience, teamwork and discipline are cultivated in the passionate pursuit of their performing talents, thus fulfilling the broader agenda of character-building.

Sports
Believing that sports are an important asset in our students’ development, we seek to contribute to their growth and character through a line-up of competitive and recreational sports.

Besides reaping health benefits, they learn to internalise positive values associated with sports, such as resilience, discipline and sportsmanship. Our sports curriculum has thus been expanded to include:

Badminton bullet Silat
bullet Bowling bullet Soccer
bullet In-line skating bullet Swimming

At the Metta School, every student enjoys equal rights and access to these learning opportunities. Various assistance schemes are in place to help needy children cope with school fees, transport fares and family rations, hence assuring them peace of mind.

As we provide food rations and functional items to students from needy families, donations in kind and cash will help them receive quality care at home and in school. For more details, please contact us at 6788 5800.
