Offering

Offerings made to the Triple Gems signify gratitude, reverence and spirituality. Typical material offerings include lit candles or oil lamps, flowers, edibles, beverages and incense. Each bears a unique symbolism that is illustrated as follows:

  • The lighting of a candle or an oil lamp represents the light of wisdom illuminating the darkness of ignorance.
  • The offering of flowers epitomises the aspiration to achieve the body of the Buddha as well as the teaching of impermanence.
  • The offering of edibles and liquids represents the nectar of dharma and the wish to achieve it.
  • The burning of incense represents the fragrant scent of morality.
