Metta Day Activity Centre for the Intellectually Disabled

Metta Home for the Disabled & Metta Home Day Activity Centre

Metta Home for the Disabled & Metta Home Day Activity Centre

Background
The establishment of the Metta Day Activity Centre for the Intellectually Disabled (MIDAC) in 1995 spearheaded and paved the development of Metta’s disability care services. Shortly within two years after its inception, the centre located in Hougang was fast approaching its maximum capacity. Such rapid growth gave rise to the substantive need for a larger centre that was capable of administering more comprehensive care.

The Metta Home for the Disabled and Metta Home Day Activity Centre were thus set up in December 2000 in Woodlands to cater to clients living in the northern region. Funded by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Metta, we provide residential care and day care services for people with various disabilities aged between 16 and 55 years, irrespective of race and religion.

Programmes & Services

Characterised by scenic landscaping and practical amenities, the combined premises are able to accommodate 103 residents and 50 day care clients. Presently, the Metta Home has 95 residents with three vacancies being set aside for respite care and emergency cases, while the day activity centre has 25 clients. They are mostly referred to us by the MCYS, medical institutions and other voluntary welfare organisations.

All our programmes and activities are geared towards helping our beneficiaries lead independent and fulfilling lives by enhancing their self-esteem, confidence and identities. In addition, we work closely with their parents and family members to facilitate their integration into the society.

Residential Services (Metta Home)

Replicating a homely ambience, the Metta Home comes equipped with rooms that are tastefully furnished with customised fittings. A 24-hour nurse-call system is installed in every room to deliver prompt attention to the residents when needed. Providing them with holistic care is a multi-disciplinary team that comprises experienced staff nurses, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist and a social worker.

Individual care plans (ICP) are drawn up for each resident to address his or her developmental and psychological needs. The ICP aims to help them achieve progress in areas involving activities of daily living, community living skills and social skills. By maximising their abilities in these areas, their quality of life can be improved.

Day Activity Centre (DAC)

Covering core aspects like Activities of Daily Living, Community Living Skills, Pre-Vocational Skills and Social & Recreational Activities, MIDAC’s well-established curriculum is adopted at our day activity centre that is located within Metta Home. (View our curriculum)

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy sessions are also conducted according to the clients’ needs to help them restore mobility and minimize the effects of muscular atrophy, structural and postural deformities.
